Skiing, Kids, and Internet Marketing

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

What does skiing, kids, and internet marketing have to do with each other?

Last night my husband and I took our two oldest daughters skiing for their first time. They were very excited about it!

To prepare them we found some YouTube videos of other children skiing the night before we went. They loved watching them and were determined to be as good as them.

When we got to the ski hill everything was exciting. Putting on the ski boots for the first time, getting those ski’s and being able to carry them outside, moving around in ski’s, getting to the rope lift, and finally getting to the top of the hill. They did not want to stop to take this picture! They were too excited!

Then came the work (especially for the parents:). They learned very quickly that it was not as easy as it had appeared on the videos. My oldest daughter was more cautious and it took her some time to get used to snow-plowing so she could control her speed. She worked at it hard with lots of hand holding and coaching from her mom and dad. By the end of the night she was going up and down the bunny hill independently. She could even stop in the middle of the hill by herself. It was incredible really!

My middle daughter loved the skiing but just loved to go really fast down the hill. She did really good (she’s only 4) but she did really get how to stop and slow down completely on her own. I skied right by her  side to slow her or stop her or steer her away from crashes! Though she did not hone in on specific skills the balance and coordination she mastered was very impressive to say the least!

Both girls took a couple of minor spills. They really had a hard time trying to figure out how to get up with their skis on. My husband and I helped them up each time by guiding them with words. They did struggle but we knew the best way for them to learn was to let them figure it out with guidance rather than just plucking them up.

So what does this little story have to do about internet marketing? Through the process of teaching and watching my daughters ski I could not help to compare it to my own journey of learning internet marketing.

First the excitement of just getting started. Seeing others that are successful and thinking I can do that and I can do that better! Visualizing the process and how it was going to be great!

Then, after starting realizing that this might be a little trickier than I thought. Getting hung up on certain marketing techniques that seem Greek or just plain wiping out on my first attempts at something. Understanding that internet marketing is fun but takes a little more work and effort than I previously expected was a milestone in itself!

Finally to honing in on one skill and practicing and working hard to get it right. Taking a few falls along the way but having a trusty mentor and coach to give the hand up.

If you are struggling in your internet marketing stop and re-evaluate your techniques. Go back to the “bunny hill”. Do a technique you are comfortable with and do it until you are great at it. Then move on to a little bigger challenge. The more you challenge yourself the better you will get.

Finally, expect your mentor to guide you rather than picking you up each time. With this guidance you will learn more and it will accelerate your success at a much greater speed. Everyone learns at different speeds and that is OK. Do not get frustrated by the success stories of people who make it in less than 3 months. Accept your unique learning curve and stay on it!

More than anything enjoy the ride!

The Grass is Greener on the Other Side of the Fence……

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

How many times have you heard this one? How many times have you used this statement?

Growing up on a farm I got to see this in action. Often times you would see a big cow in a pasture full of grass poking her head out of the fence to get to the grass on the other side. Then there were the cows that really took this to a new level that would break through the fence to get to the greener grass.

On Twitter the other day I was messaging with a new follower. I always ask:

How’s life treating you?

It’s such a simple question but I find that the most positive people answer it. I find the responses mostly positive and inspirational. I had a particular follower respond that, life was good but you know the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

For some reason at the moment I read that a new thought occurred to me.

Why do we humans compare ourselves to a big dumb cow? (I know that from personal experience as well:-) We are not big, dumb cows. We get to make hundreds of choices everyday. These choices determine what our pasture looks like or if we are confined to a pasture at all!

This thought also made me think of Jerry Clark’s CD Murphy’s Committee. If you have listened to it you know that he talks about cows and rhino’s. He talks about settling in the pasture with the other cows or entering into the jungle with your inner rhino and making it to the other side.

Combining these two thoughts in my head brought about this response from me to my new follower:

“If the grass is greener on the other side put your head down like a rhino and blow through the fence.”

Thankfully the reader appreciated it and let me know it by replying, “Good one, I appreciate that insight”.

My thought to you is if you feel like you are stuck in a “pasture” evaluate what kind of choices you are making on a daily basis.

How many hours are you wasting in front of a TV?

How many inspiring books have you read this month, this year, or this lifetime?

What challenges are you taking on that will make you grow as a person?

Are  you giving up when the going gets tough?

You see we are not even close to being cows.  If the grass appears greener on the other side of the fence we can use this amazing thing behind our eyeballs called a brain. (Cows have a brain but it is very small compared to ours:-) We can choose to use it to keep us where we are at, or, to propel us closer to our goals and dreams.

To be completely honest with you, it can be a jungle out there. You will come about challenges outside of the pasture. These challenges will test you to the limit. But, if you take each one and be grateful for the learning experience it provides soon you will develop thicker skin. With thicker skin you will weather these challenges better and better each time! Before you know it you will have grown into the successful person you knew was hiding inside of you all along!

Get out of you comfort zone.

Make great things happen today!

Mike Dillard and me in Houston at a Birthday Bash.

Just this past week I had the opportunity to attend an event with the likes of Mike Dillard. It was an incredible event filled with exciting new announcements, products, and successful leaders.

Attending events is one of the best ways you can catapult your business forward. How? By masterminding with leaders you become more like them. When you become more like them you attract more people to you. It is an exciting cycle that you want to be a part of!

Maybe you have heard before that your income is the average of the people you hang around with. If your closest associations do not have the income you desire, attending events are a great way to form new associations!

These events infuse me with a new energy to come home with. They also seem to have a direct impact on my results as well.

Event = Revived energy= Greater Productivity= Business reaches a higher level!

My very favorite part of attending these events is meeting new people. People who are just like me. They are passionate about life, business, entrepreneurship, and setting and meeting goals.

So take a chance and get to the next event you can. You may thank yourself for years to come that you did!

To close I would like to leave you with a quote:

~ Teamwork is so important that it is virtually impossible for you to reach the heights of your capabilities or make the money that you want without becoming very good at it. ~ Brian Tracy
